The Bates College Department of Psychology invites applications for a one-year position as Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology, to begin August 1, 2024. The area of specialization within psychology is open. Anyone on such a trajectory is encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will share our enthusiasm for fostering students’ ability and motivation to engage in scientific inquiry and to apply the resulting knowledge. The successful candidate will teach five undergraduate courses during the 2024-2025 academic year, including a 200-level course, and at least one upper-level seminar, each in the candidate’s area of specialty, as well as our introductory Principles of Psychology course. As appropriate, courses may include a community-engaged component (e.g., field placement), and the staff at our college’s Harward Center for Community Partnerships stands ready to assist in forging connections with community partners.

Bates is a highly selective institution, with an excellent student body, and we are committed to inclusive engagement with those students. Indeed, the college’s mission statement celebrates “the transformative power of our differences.” Accordingly, we believe that campus diversity can contribute to student learning, and we embrace the college’s aim to extend access to a Bates education to an ever-wider range of students. Candidates who can enhance the diversity of the faculty and/or support an increasingly diverse student body are encouraged to apply.  We are particularly interested in attracting colleagues who share our commitment to supportive teaching and mentoring of students from a wide range of under-represented backgrounds and marginalized identities.

Review of applications will begin on May 17, 2024 and continue until the position is filled. Complete applications will include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, unofficial graduate transcripts, teaching statement, and teaching evaluations (if available). In the cover letter and/or teaching statement, we ask candidates to comment on their ability to promote equity and inclusion in our campus community, especially through support of students from diverse backgrounds. Applicants should also anticipate providing two letters of recommendation in the event that they are contacted for an interview.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
