Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Director, the Disability Coordinator is responsible for the coordination and provision of programs, services, and accommodations for students with disabilities. This position will directly coordinate student accommodations and works directly with students to discuss their disability, needed support and self-advocacy. Additionally, the Disability Specialist directly coordinates assistive technology resources and services for students with disabilities.

 

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:

 

 

DISABILITY PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION: Determine disability program eligibility and accommodations through an interactive process with students. This includes educating students about documentation requirements, making appropriate referrals when documentation isn't available, determining which documentation should be sent to the RCLD for review, interviewing students to determine the nature of the functional limitations related to learning and academics, providing suggestions for appropriate accommodations, and drafting necessary accommodation letters for appropriate faculty and/or staff. Provides extensive direct support to students with disabilities. Assists in the disability testing accommodation process for students. Appropriately supports students with disabilities by referring students to campus resources and support services. Participates in outreach to new students and families regarding the processes and procedures of the Disability Services Office. Maintains an updated knowledge of rulings from the OCR, court case law, national standards, and BOR policies related to individuals with disabilities.

 

OUTREACH AND EDUCATION: Assists the Director in achieving community outreach goals for the office and with collaboration goals involving campus partners. Provides individual and group training for students, faculty, and staff in the areas of ADA, assistive technology, testing accommodations, etc. Develops, implements, and maintains accessible technology plans for students with disabilities. Serves as a resource to external agencies for issues of and requirements germane to disability services and accessible technology.

 

TECHNOLOGY: Participates in divisional and college-wide committees as requested by the Director to advise on technological accessibility issues and assistive technology requirements. Assist in the implementation of disability access needs into the university's comprehensive planning process. Advises and assists faculty and staff on access issues/concerns for students with disabilities in all courses and labs throughout the University. Coordinates University alternative formats with CIDI or other agencies. Provides direct instruction and support to students with disabilities regarding accessing and using assistive technology.

 

GENERAL OFFICE DUTIES:

 

Provides back-up when needed for the efficient operation of Testing & Disability Services, including test proctoring, answering phones, assisting customers, etc. Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Human Services field, Psychology, Social Work, Rehabilitation Counseling, or related discipline

 

OR

 

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field with three – five years of related experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Experience

 

Knowledge of assistive technology and devices.

 

Knowledge of auxiliary aids.

 

Familiarity with strategies and experience working with students with disabilities, preferably in an institution of higher education.

 

Clear knowledge and understanding of the application of Section 504 and 508 and the ADA especially in the higher education context.

 

Ability to recognize legal risk associated with certain disability issues.

 

Demonstrated knowledge of determining functional limitations due to a disability

 

Demonstrated knowledge of all categories of disabilities and appropriate accommodations in an academic environment.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

KNOWLEDGE

 

Knowledge of assistive technology devices including computer hardware and software.

 

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.

 

SKILLS

 

Detail-oriented with strong organizational, prioritization and multi-tasking skills.

 

ABILITIES

 

Ability to communicate and interact well with people of all ages and backgrounds, excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

 

Ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently and re-prioritize, ability to successfully adapt to rapid change; ability to work collaboratively and to foster effective relationships.

 

Ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts.

 

Ability to use spreadsheet, database and/or presentation software.

 

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday – Friday (work outside of the normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)

 

Pay Grade: 14

 

Salary Minimum: $36,197 – Midpoint: $48,866

 

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position

Conditions of Employment
