Assistant/Associate Professor Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in Counselor Education. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31, 2025 for a fall hire.
  • Evidence for success (or potential for success) in research and scholarly activities
  • Experience teaching (or co-teaching) and/or providing supervision to graduate students in counseling
  • Professional work experience as a mental health counselor
  • Active engagement in mental health counseling (e.g., attending counseling conferences, maintaining counseling credentials, publishing in counseling journals, etc.)

Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)

  • Doctoral degree from a CACREP-accredited counselor education program
  • Licensed or license-eligible as a clinical mental health counselor in North Carolina
  • Experience teaching and providing supervision to graduate students in clinical mental health and school counseling
  • Credentialed (or ability to be credentialed) as an arts-based practitioner (Registered Expressive Arts Therapist or other)
  • Practical and/or teaching experience in:
    • Arts-based and/or creative methods in counseling
    • Assessment and research
    • Addictions
    • Children and adolescents
  • Willingness to serve in a leadership role in the CMHC program in the future
  • At least three years of full-time clinical mental health counseling experience

Description of the Department or Unit
The Department of Counseling, Family Therapy, and Higher Education (CTH) at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track nine-month faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program beginning August 11, 2025.The CTH department offers graduate programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Professional School Counseling (CACREP-accredited) as well as in Marriage and Family Therapy (COAMFTE accredited), Student Affairs Administration, and Higher Education. We also offer graduate certificates in Expressive Arts Therapy, Addiction Counseling, and College and University Teaching. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach a 3:3 course load on campus including core counseling courses, clinical mental health counseling courses, expressive arts therapy courses, and/or field experience courses. Summer teaching is available.
  • Engage in research and scholarly activities
  • Provide service to the program, department, institution, and counseling profession
  • Advise and mentor students in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program and/or the Expressive Arts Therapy graduate certificate program and/or the Addiction Counseling certificate program.
