College
The relatively newly formed (2020) College for Health, Community and Policy (HCAP) brings together researchers and educators in psychology, criminology, demography, kinesiology, public administration, public health, social work, and sociology. The College is also home to four research centers and institutes: the Center for Applied Community and Policy Research, the Center for Community-Based and Applied Health Research, the Institute for Demographic and Social Research, and the Institute for Health Disparities. This structural organization is amplifying partnerships and collaborations in teaching, research and community engagement. Additionally, HCAP has partnered with the University of Texas Health at San Antonio to build collaborative programs, including a school of public health—the UT SPH San Antonio—in partnership with MetroHealth, the City of San Antonio's public health department, as well as a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.
Department
The Department of Psychology in the College for Health, Community and Policy (HCAP) at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) consists of 26 full-time faculty members and offers undergraduate bachelors of science in psychology, a master's degree of experimental psychology, and a doctoral degree in experimental psychology. Our faculty and students have been recognized regionally, nationally and internationally for excellence in both research and teaching.
Position Summary
UTSA is committed to hiring multiple positions over the next several years as part of a cluster hire to support the development of the collaborative doctoral program in clinical psychology and fulfill the missions of all programs within the Department of Psychology. As part of a larger cluster hire, outstanding candidates at the Assistant Professor level are invited to apply for three positions to support the existing MS and PhD Experimental Psychology programs, while also bridging or buttressing a new PhD program in Clinical Psychology under initial phases of development.
Preference will be given to hiring (1) a social psychologist with quantitative expertise in health, measurement, and social cognition (e.g., perceptions and interpretation of other people's thoughts and emotions, social identity and prejudice, health attitudes, lay theories of mental disorders, etc.); (2) a physiological/biopsychology/neuroscience psychologist with preference for expertise in psychological health, cognitive, quantitative, or computational neuroscience; and (3) an industrial or organizational psychologist. In general, we will also prioritize applicants in areas including personality, health and well-being (especially military health, addictions), and measurement/assessment.
Our programs pride themselves on the quantitative training of its students, and therefore, we prefer candidates with strong statistical skills who can contribute in this domain. Successful candidates will demonstrate: (1) a solid research agenda, publication record, and external funding capability in psychology and related areas commensurate with the rank of assistant professor; (2) demonstrated ability to excel in undergraduate and graduate education, training, and mentorship; and (3) potential to develop collaborative relationships with new and existing faculty members both within and across the department's programs.
Qualifications
The required qualifications of the successful candidates are a Ph.D. degree in Psychology and an appropriate research and teaching record for appointment. Moreover, the successful candidate(s) must demonstrate their ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of first-generation and low-income urban populations and support the University's commitment to thrive as a Hispanic Serving Institution and a model for student success. Applicants for an Assistant Professor position must earn a Ph.D. degree by August 1st, 2024, and must demonstrate a strong potential for excellence in research and teaching. Ideal candidates for all positions include those who demonstrate evidence of a commitment to collaboration in research, teaching, and service endeavors. The most competitive candidates will also have a strong record of external funding and experience in interdisciplinary research, curriculum development, and/or program development/management.
